The purpose of this page is to provide a list of links to articles on a variety of issues relevant to breeders or owners who are looking for explanations. Each year there are advancements of our medical understanding of dogs as a species. In 2005 the canine genome was mapped! Some notable Veterinarians are now saying that one third of what we held as facts 10 years ago has been proven as completely wrong today. The lesson is it pays to read new studies in the interest of the well being of man's best friend.
While I am not endorsing any of the following links I have found them valuable as "food for thought" to help make educated decisions. I welcome additions that you may come across. Simply e-mail them to me and I'll include them as appropriate.

Homeopathy
Homoeopathy is a system of human medicine founded 200 years ago by a German physician named Hahnemann and now practised by doctors, vets, dentists, nurses and non-medically qualified practitioners the world over. “Let likes cure likes”, is the cornerstone of the discipline. The system is based on a concept called the law of similars in which remedies containing minute amounts of natural substances stimulate the body's own defenses against specific symptoms and imbalances. These substances, if they were given in large doses to healthy individuals or animals, would produce those same symptoms. Homeopathy is a system of medicine that utilizes micro-doses of natural substances -- herbs, bark, seeds, berries, flowers, minerals and animal matter. Unlike powerful pharmaceutical drugs, homeopathic remedies do not create side-effects. The use of conventional drugs and preparations often means the risk of side effects and in some cases, the "cure" is worse than the problem.
Veterinary homoeopathy uses the human remedies in exactly the same way. A very full history of the nature of the condition and the nature of the patient is noted. This is analysed by the vet to find the closest possible match. The remedy selected is then administered to the animal in tablet or drops on a mild food stuff. Research is ongoing in homoeopathy and, overall, the results are positive. This is a tribute to workers throughout the world as modern research methods do not lend themselves easily to studying a form of medicine based on individualising prescriptions to suit the patient.
Whether you believe in it or not, homeopathy does offer an alternative form of treatment which some clients wish to try for their pets. Horses, dogs and cats have been found to respond very well to homoeopathic remedies, which are intended for chronic disease rather than clinical signs of acute disease. Homeopathy may on occasions be useful for a wide variety of canine conditions, including: Skin conditions, musculoskeletal, developmental, respiratory, arthritis, intestinal conditions, circulatory problems, behavioural or phobic conditions, infertility, liver, kidney or bladder conditions etc. It is also a great complement to surgery and is use it all the time with surgery to reduce pain and swelling and enhance the healing process.
Homeopathy is gaining most adherents among Americans seeking natural and effective alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs. Approximately 2.5 million individuals, or one percent of the population, are now using homeopathic remedies, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. The same attraction for natural, safe medicines has turned many individuals on to homeopathics for the health problems of their pets.
In the U.S. , the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association includes over 250 veterinarians who use homeopathics to varying degrees in their treatment programs. In the U.S. , homeopathy is a formal branch of medicine recognized by federal law. The standards for strength, purity and quality of homeopathic remedies were established by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The success achieved by homeopathic veterinarians is a powerful argument against homeopathy's critics who say that relief is due to a placebo effect. Those critics cannot say that when an animal's symptoms disappear after treatment with homeopathic remedies, the recovery was due to the animal's expectation of a cure!
